GRANTS available for communities
Communities Against Cancer is a project to help people reduce their risk of cancer, be aware of the signs and symptoms of cancer, and seek help at an earlier stage.
Funded by Wessex Cancer Alliance, the project aims to benefit people who are less likely to know how to look after their health or are less able to do so. You don’t need to be knowledgeable about cancer to apply for a grant, as we will provide Cancer Champion training.
We are offering SMALL and LARGE grants to help organisations and individuals join us in this mission.
The project is focused on the Isle of Wight, urban south Hampshire, and south Dorset. If your organisation works in or near these areas then we would love to hear your ideas of how you can help your community improve their cancer-related health outcomes.
We’re offering small grants of £50 to £500 for groups and individuals who want to carry out activities in their own community that will raise people’s awareness and knowledge about cancer.
Examples of the types activities could include:
- Healthy cooking workshops
- Ladies coffee and cake morning with an explanation of breast self-checking
- Cancer awareness session at your place of worship or community celebration
- A pub evening to talk about cancer screening and self-checking
Application deadline: 1pm on 13 May (We will have two more application rounds, with deadlines on 21 October 2019 and 2 March 2020.)

We also have large grants of up to £10,000 for not-for-profit organisations that work closely with people who are less likely to know how to look after their health or are less able to do so. We want to help organisations empower and enable people to get help earlier and reduce their risk of getting cancer.
Examples of these groups include:
- Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) groups
- People with mental health problems
- Informal carers
- People with learning difficulties
- People who are socially isolated
Training and development
We will soon be appointing a project co-ordinator who will be organising training events for people who’d like to learn more about cancer.
We’ll expect people getting a grant to attend one of these sessions, but at least some of them will be open to all. Look out for more details once our new staff member has hit their stride!
