Member of the month / Home-Start Hampshire

Being a parent, whatever your situation, can be tough.

Many parents feel exhausted and overwhelmed by the stresses of family life, but for some parents it’s a particular struggle and this is where Home-Start Hampshire is able to help.

Home-Start Hampshire is a voluntary organisation in which trained volunteers provide non-judgemental practical and emotional support to families with children age 0-11 years of age. Our volunteers help parents to improve their confidence and empower them to build better lives for their children.

“Knowing someone was on my side, my confidence with my children and as a father has increased. I have got to the point I can steer my own ship thanks to the paddle my volunteer has given me.” – Parent –

Home-Start Hampshire operates in six areas across Hampshire (Gosport & Fareham, Meon Valley, Havant, New Forest, Weywater and Rushmoor & Hart), and can offer support to anybody living in a local scheme area that has at least one child aged 0-11 years or is expecting a baby.  The regular support can be provided in the home, in a group, or occasionally both.

There are many reasons why families may need additional support:
  • Feeling isolated in their community, have no family nearby or be struggling to make friends
  • Finding it hard to cope because of their own or their child’s illness or disability
  • Struggling with the emotional and physical demands of having several young children
  • Complex needs that can impact on childrens’ well-being, e.g. domestic abuse, debt, drug or alcohol misuse, living in poverty, poor living environment, etc

All services are offered free of charge and although families can be referred by other professionals, families must consent to the referral.

Home-Start Hampshire receives only a small amount of government funding; they rely heavily on trusts, grants, fundraising and the support and generosity of the local community, businesses and organisations to continue their vital work.

  • Pamber parish council were really pleased with the support provided by Action Hampshire’s Rural Housing Enabler helping us through the development process. It was a good experience.

  • Action Hampshire has always been a useful font of information for us at Winchester Churches Nightshelter. Sue has always been really helpful, and I do find the updates from the ‘wider’ world to be of interest.

    Michèle Price, Winchester Churches Nightshelter
  • Having Action Hampshire as a point of reference, support and guidance is invaluable for small to medium sized charities like ourselves. Without them, we would be far less connected and less able to serve our beneficiaries in a meaningful and coordinated way.

Juno Hollyhock, The Rose Road Association
  • I have found Action Hampshire to be truly innovative and forward thinking in their approach to their work and their passion for the voluntary and community sector is easily measured through their work to help improve the lives of all sections of the community.

Grant Cornwell, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Community Foundation
  • Action Hampshire are the most fantastic organisation and it has been a pleasure to collaborate with them. They are very positive and easy to work with, from Rachel’s warmth on the front desk all the way up to Sue’s vast knowledge and experience on the top floor.

    George Scott-Welsh, IncuHive
