GRANTS available for communities

Communities Against Cancer is a project to help people reduce their risk of cancer, be aware of the signs and symptoms of cancer, and seek help at an earlier stage.

Funded by Wessex Cancer Alliance, the project aims to benefit people who are less likely to know how to look after their health or are less able to do so. You don’t need to be knowledgeable about cancer to apply for a grant, as we will provide Cancer Champion training.

We are offering grants of up to £500 to help organisations and individuals join us in this mission.

The project is focused on the Isle of Wight, urban south Hampshire, and south Dorset. If your organisation works in or near these areas then we would love to hear your ideas of how you can help your community improve their cancer-related health outcomes. See the map at the link below, and contact us if you’re not sure whether you’re in a qualifying area.

Small grants

We’re offering small grants of £50 to £500 for groups and individuals who want to carry out activities in their own community that will raise people’s awareness and knowledge about cancer.

Examples of activities we have recently supported include:

  • A series of exercise and well-being sessions for severely isolated people
  • Raising awareness of cancer prevention and screening through a regular board game session
  • A health awareness day for people with various medical and support needs
  • Getting cancer information to people in football, darts, and pool teams

Please see the guidance notes and application form below for more details of what we are looking for. Remember, the aim of Communities Against Cancer is to help people reduce their risk of cancer, be aware of the signs and symptoms of cancer, and seek help at an earlier stage.

Application deadline: Mon 30 Sep and then the last working day of each month, up to Fri 28 Feb 2020

Training and development

Our project co-ordinator, Claire Vincent, is organising ‘Cancer Champion’ training events for people who’d like to learn more about cancer.

We’ll expect people getting a grant to attend one of these sessions, but places can also be offered to anyone who is interested in finding out more. If you’d like to attend a session please email Claire or call her on 07801 379671.

There is more information and news about the project and cancer issues generally on our website.

  • Pamber parish council were really pleased with the support provided by Action Hampshire’s Rural Housing Enabler helping us through the development process. It was a good experience.

    Chris Goss, Pamber Parish Council
  • Action Hampshire has always been a useful font of information for us at Winchester Churches Nightshelter. Sue has always been really helpful, and I do find the updates from the ‘wider’ world to be of interest.

    Michèle Price, Winchester Churches Nightshelter
  • Having Action Hampshire as a point of reference, support and guidance is invaluable for small to medium sized charities like ourselves. Without them, we would be far less connected and less able to serve our beneficiaries in a meaningful and coordinated way.

Juno Hollyhock, The Rose Road Association
  • I have found Action Hampshire to be truly innovative and forward thinking in their approach to their work and their passion for the voluntary and community sector is easily measured through their work to help improve the lives of all sections of the community.

Grant Cornwell, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Community Foundation
  • Action Hampshire are the most fantastic organisation and it has been a pleasure to collaborate with them. They are very positive and easy to work with, from Rachel’s warmth on the front desk all the way up to Sue’s vast knowledge and experience on the top floor.

    George Scott-Welsh, IncuHive
