Community Business Trade Up Programme

Grandad’s Front Room – Winner of the 2019 Small Business Big Heart Awards!

Danny Dawes the Founder of Grandad’s Front Room has an inherent passion to support people in urgent need in a variety of ways.

Grandad’s Front Room is a community support shop whose aim is to support local community groups/charities through actions that make a difference. Their mission is to enable and empower individuals, families, community groups in Bognor Regis and surrounding area without prejudice of ANY form.

They operate on a not-for-profit basis helping those that need them, bringing the community together and promoting a togetherness programme. They sell retro, vintage, upcycled, recycled and collectible items in their shop and promote crafters, creators, junksmiths, knitters, inventors and artists. They donate goods to those in need to help them through difficult times.

Fergus Lyons, Action Hampshire’s Social Enterprise Administrator says, “Danny is an inspiration to us and other social enterprise organisations in Sussex, as this year he invited us to visit his shop in Bognor Regis to tell others about the Community Business Trade Up programme”.

It is an absolute pleasure to be able to champion the Community Business Trade Up (CBTU) program in our locality. Thank you for the success that your training and opportunities have brought to us, the CBTU is not just for one year…. it stays with you long after… it enables you to reach further… it empowers you to do more for many.

Danny Dawes, Founder of Grandads Front Room CIC

They gained Community Interest Company (CIC) status in November 2016 and joined the Action Hampshire hosted Community Business Trade Up programme in 2018. Danny says he hopes that others in his area will now recognise other social enterprises/community businesses and the kind of help they may need.

They operate a ‘Front Room’ mentality and if you just want to pop in for a cuppa and a custard cream they welcome all to do so!

  • Pamber parish council were really pleased with the support provided by Action Hampshire’s Rural Housing Enabler helping us through the development process. It was a good experience.

  • Action Hampshire has always been a useful font of information for us at Winchester Churches Nightshelter. Sue has always been really helpful, and I do find the updates from the ‘wider’ world to be of interest.

    Michèle Price, Winchester Churches Nightshelter
  • Having Action Hampshire as a point of reference, support and guidance is invaluable for small to medium sized charities like ourselves. Without them, we would be far less connected and less able to serve our beneficiaries in a meaningful and coordinated way.

Juno Hollyhock, The Rose Road Association
  • I have found Action Hampshire to be truly innovative and forward thinking in their approach to their work and their passion for the voluntary and community sector is easily measured through their work to help improve the lives of all sections of the community.

Grant Cornwell, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Community Foundation
  • Action Hampshire are the most fantastic organisation and it has been a pleasure to collaborate with them. They are very positive and easy to work with, from Rachel’s warmth on the front desk all the way up to Sue’s vast knowledge and experience on the top floor.
