Member of the Month // Winchester Churches Nightshelter
Winchester Churches Nightshelter provides a vital lifeline to those experiencing homelessness in Hampshire. It has 17 beds, opens every day of the year and remains the only Nightshelter offering direct access emergency accommodation in Hampshire.
On average, the charity supports between 100 – 140 homeless people yearly, with residents usually staying until more permanent accommodation can be found to match their needs.
As well as receiving high quality accommodation, nutritious food, and a safe and caring temporary home, during their stay at the Nightshelter residents benefit from a programme of practical and emotional support to help them escape homelessness for good. This includes one-to-one advocacy support and advice, computer and jobs skills training, help with budgeting and finances, practical aid with food and nutrition, guidance for anyone with substance misuse problems, and counselling. Their aim is to help everyone who stays with them escape homelessness for good.
The charity has a dedicated team of around 240 volunteers, but always need more support from individuals and local businesses. Find out how you could help via the Nightshelter’s website or follow them on Facebook and Twitter.
