Member of the Month // Kitenge
Kitenge is a social enterprise empowering tailors in Tanzania, East Africa, to improve their livelihoods by supporting their fine craftsmanship.
The modern, afrocentric clothing designs, which are sold worldwide online, are lovingly handmade using high quality, 100% cotton, colourful African wax print fabrics. All of the materials, from buttons to swing tickets, are locally sourced in Tanzania supporting small businesses, the African textile industry and local economy. After the clothing is made, the offcuts are recycled to make smaller items including hair accessories and jewellery, minimising fabric wastage and providing work for women.
The tailors have used the profits from their orders to open their own workshops, buy new sewing machines, employ staff and purchase land so they can start to build a family home of their own.
Sian Wells is the founder of Kitenge. She attended SSE’s Start Up Fellowship Programme in 2016.
