Member of the Month // Independent Lives
Independent Lives is a user-led charity working with disabled people, people with health conditions, and carers, to enable people to lead full, active and independent lives.
Our mission is to deliver top quality support and services to enable people with disabilities, care needs or caring responsibilities to lead independent and fulfilling lives. We strive to break down barriers that prevent people from living independent lives so that everyone can participate as fully as they want to in society.
We believe that disability is caused by the way society is organised, rather than by a person’s impairment. When barriers are removed, disabled people can be independent and equal in society, with choice and control over their own lives.
We work directly with disabled people, and parents and carers of disabled children: Providing a Direct Payments support service to help people arrange and manage their own personalised care and support.
We promote social inclusion: Supporting wellbeing approaches to promote social inclusion, preventing people from becoming socially excluded. We do this through organising social events such as tea dances and coffee mornings for our Care Services customers.
We have a programme for volunteering: The programme offers a broad range of volunteering opportunities which we can shape around the volunteer depending on their needs, interests, skills and experience.
We work with health and social care professionals: Providing training and training materials, consultancy, and recruitment support.
