Is it just heartburn or cancer of the oesophagus?

Medium heart burn affects 1 in 10 of us

It is estimated that in the region of 500,000 people in the UK have the pre-cancerous condition, Barrett’s Oesophagus, and most are totally unaware of it. Around 10% (50,000) of those will progress to oesophageal cancer. Despite the best modern treatments survival from oesophageal cancer is appalling.

8000 people die per year in the UK, that’s 22 people a day.

Cancer of the Oesophagus is the sixth greatest cancer killer in the UK and we have the worst rates in the world. This is mainly due to a diagnosis being made when the condition is too advanced to be treated, as the preceding symptoms are few and often ignored.

Long Term Persistent Heartburn (lasting 3 or 4 weeks) is a significant symptom of Oesophageal Adenocarcinoma and Barrett’s Oesophagus. People self-medicate by buying antacids or Proton Pump Inhibitors – including Gaviscon and Rennies). The sale of antacids exceeds the sale of aspirin in the UK.
